Colombia watch: HVDC line to connect 3GW of renewables

Colombia will connect up to 3,000MW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid via a new high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line in the country's north.

The government will provide 5bn pesos (US$1mn) to finance a study that will define the technical specifications of the project, according to a statement from energy ministry planning unit UPME

"The electrical transmission line with HVDC technology will allow La Guajira [department] to continue positioning itself as a hub for the generation of electrical energy with non-conventional energy sources," the entity said.

It added that the line would connect around 15 wind and solar projects to the national interconnected system (SIN).

Meanwhile, UPME has published a report outlining long-term price forecasts for the country's leading energy sources.

The 34-page document projects production prices for each source and the cost of using them to generate electricity.

It considers crude oil, natural gas, diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, combustion oil, LPG and coal. The forecast period runs from January 2022 to December 2037.

And the Colombian government has released a draft plan aimed at phasing out firewood and fossil fuels for household energy needs.

Comments will be received until January 4, UPME said in a memorandum.
