Colombia's Celsia makes headway on new business strategy
Colombian power company Celsia has advanced with its new business strategy that targets the residential, business and city segments.
During the group's first quarter earnings presentation, its president Ricardo Sierra highlighted that it has closed 18 photovoltaic contracts for a combined 3MW and that 97 potential deals for a total 33MW are in place.
The strategy looks to take advantage of opportunities arising from distributed generation, efficient lighting and energy storage, among other areas.
Celsia aims to build on increased awareness arising from government energy savings campaign Apagar Paga (switching off pays), which ended on April 23, but said growing demand over time will require more projects to guarantee electricity supply.
Apagar Paga began in March to help mitigate the impact of weather phenomenon El Niño on the country's hydroelectric park, and saved 1,179GWh compared with the 400GWh goal, according to the government.
Authorities terminated the campaign a week ahead of schedule due to the savings push, startup of the first two turbines at the fire-damaged Guatapé hydroelectric plant, greater thermoelectric output and improved hydrology as El Niño weakens.
Colombia's aggregate hydroelectric dam levels stood at 42% on May 10, according to wholesale power market administrator XM, compared with 25% at end-March, 30% in February and close to 45% before the Guatapé contingency.
Local hydrology, meteorology and environmental studies institute Ideam reports that as El Niño comes to an end, it is possible that normal conditions return in May or June, coinciding with the rainy season in a large part of the country.
