Cyber Watch: Brazil readies security policy, OAS turns to Cisco

Brazil’s institutional security office (GSI), the equivalent of the US National Security Council, is set to launch a national cybersecurity strategy with guidelines for the public, the government and the private sector in the coming days.

A draft is undergoing a final revision and will be made available for consultation for 30 days when it is ready, newspaper Folha de São Paulo reported.

GSI has reportedly been consulted by companies seeking guidance in the area of personal data protection amid growing concerns about reputational damage from leaking customer information.

The guidelines come as the country has been following leaks of controversial conversations involving the prosecutors responsible for the Lava Jato corruption probe task force.

Companies have until March next year to comply with the country's data protection legislation, passed last year, before being subject to fines.

The Organization of American States (OAS) announced a partnership with US company Cisco to help close the skills gap in cybersecurity in Latin America and boost innovation in this segment.

Under the agreement, Cisco will open Cybersecurity Innovation Councils throughout the region, bringing together the private and public sectors, academia, NGOs and security technology vendors

The OAS said the councils will serve as multi-stakeholder spaces to drive innovation, raise awareness and expand best practices, with the aim of helping to solve digital risks and challenges affecting the digital society.

In parallel with these councils, Cisco's training and teaching arm, Cisco Networking Academy, will offer training to help improve professional skills in cybersecurity.
