Aneel confirms safety of Retiro Baixo hydroelectric dam
Brazil's electric power regulator Aneel confirmed all necessary 2018 inspections for the 82MW Retiro Baixo hydroelectric dam and declared it safe.
The watchdog is monitoring the works for tailings containment after a mining dam operated by Vale collapsed in Minas Gerais state on Friday. The tailings are expected to reach the reservoir of the Retiro Baixo hydro plant, on Paropeba river, in the next days.
According to the regulator, the unit had its operations interrupted on Friday to carry out spillway tests and to close its water intakes to preserve its equipment.
The Retiro Baixo plant is operated by special purpose company Retiro Baixo Energética, controlled by local firms Cemig (49.9%), Furnas (49%) and Orteng (1.1%). Retiro Baixo Energética informed Aneel about its collaboration with the authorities to evaluate the impacts of the tailings displacement and to take new measures.
In addition, Chesf, a subsidiary of state-run power firm Eletrobras, said it is also monitoring the propagation of the tailings and that it will adopt measures to reduce impacts on the São Francisco river.
