Argentina launches Domuyo geothermal survey call
Argentina's planning ministry and investment development agency have launched an international tender call for a geothermal study in the 200km2 Domuyo project in Neuquén province.
The study is designed to follow up on those carried out in Domuyo in the 1980s in collaboration with Japan's international cooperation agency (Jica), according to Neuquén province's investment development agency (ADI-NQN).
The new studies will include geological, geophysical and geochemical surface services to evaluate the area's geothermal resources for possible commercial-scale electricity generation and determine the technical, economic and environmental conditions to guarantee the sustainability of the resource.
The Domuyo geothermal resource, together with those of Colo Michicó and Los Guiones in the upper basin of the Neuquén River, could produce at least 100MW of power, according to ADI-NQN.
The investment for the surveys totals US$6mn and the work will last nine months. The tender will be opened on May 29, it said.
Neuquén's geothermal resources are only used for heating, melting ice and snow, therapeutic spas and recreational purposes since Argentina shut down its only geothermal plant after the 2001 financial crisis, according to the Global Energy Network Institute.
Barrick Gold, San Juan provincial power utility EPSE and Argentine firm Geotermia Andina have carried out feasibility studies on a 20MW geothermal project in the Despoblados area of the Valle del Cura valley.
Last June, Argentina's Universidad Nacional de San Juan signed an agreement with German university Bochum to create a geothermal research center in San Juan province.
