Argentina's first 100% coal-fired plant nears completion
Work on the 240MW Santa Cruz province power plant associated with Argentina's state coal miner YCRT has reached 90% completion, government news agency Télam reported.
The plant's developer, Isolux Corsán, expects to conduct generation tests in December. The US$350mn project was initially slated to come online 2011.
YCRT expects to have stockpiled enough coal from its Río Turbio mine by year-end to run the power plant for two years, YCRT production manager Fernando Lisse said.
One of the mine's two stacked faces or benches has entered into production and YCRT's output is expected to reach 4.5Mt/year by end 2015.
The Río Turbio mine holds reserves of 427Mt with 734Mt in total resources, according to state coal development firm YCF.
Earlier this month there had been speculation in local media that the plant's fuel supply was not fully guaranteed, prompting a statement from Argentina's mining minister Jorge Mayoral, denying the claims.
Work is also underway on a 220kV interconnection line, stretching 149km between the towns of Río Turbio and Esperanza, and a new substation in Río Turbio, both of which are expected to be completed by end-2014.
This transmission project will allow for the 240MW thermo project to inject power into the SADI grid.
The only other power plant in Argentina which uses coal is AES Argentina's 650MW San Nicolás thermo plant outside Buenos Aires, which burned 851,278t of coal in 2013, in addition to fuel oil and natural gas, according to data from grid operator Cammesa.
