Located in Rondônia state, Jirau is being built alongside the 3.15GW Santo Antônio plant on the Madeira river.

The federal government says the mega-complex is vital to helping Brazil meet future power demand, which is expected to grow by 7GW/y until 2020.

Jirau's operating consortium Energia Sustentável do Brasil comprises GDF Suez (40%), Mitsui (20%), Eletrosul (20%) and Chesf (20%).
