Located in Rondônia state, the 3.15GW Santo Antônio plant is being built alongside the 3.75GW Jirau facility on the Madeira river.

The federal government says the complex is vital to helping Brazil meet future power demand, expected to grow by 7GW/y until 2020.

Santo Antônio is due to be completed in 2016, while Jirau is scheduled to be fully operating next year.
