Celsia reveals new focus areas
Non-conventional renewable energy is one area that Colombian power company Celsia aims to strengthen.
Other areas include distributed generation, power transport and energy supply solutions for off-grid zones, CEO Ricardo Sierra said during the group's second quarter results presentation.
Sierra also revealed that Celsia had begun talks with the national government and communities to resolve socio-environmental and land issues related to 352MW hydroelectric project Porvenir II. A development decision will be taken in the coming months, he said.
Regarding El Niño, Sierra said hydropower generation levels should start to recover, citing the start of Colombia's rainy season, but that the drought situation in the country's southwest remains "very delicate." He highlighted forecasts that indicate the current El Niño is strengthening.
He confirmed that subsidiary Epsa – which also released 2Q15 results – is scheduled to complete test operations of 55MW hydroelectric plant Cucuana's second unit next month.
On another front, Sierra said development of Colombia's first LNG regasification terminal in the northern coastal city of Cartagena is on track and that studies are underway as part of the Grupo Térmico consortium to determine where gas supply will come from.
In its Integrated Report 2014, released in May, Celsia said the LNG infrastructure's estimated startup date is December 2016.
And in Central America, where Celsia has generation assets in Costa Rica and Panama, the CEO said the company continues to look for profitable opportunities, including greenfield projects, as well as opportunities with sister company Cementos Argos which has energy-related ventures in Central America and the Caribbean.
