The 162.6MW Tasajero II thermoelectric plant in Colombia's Norte de Santander department is scheduled to begin operations on November 30, 2015, said local generator Termotasajero's director José David Montoya.
Korean firm Hyundai is constructing Tasajero II, one of several planned or existing coal-fired thermoelectric plants in Norte de Santander, Montoya said at BNamericas' 8th Andean Energy Summit in Bogotá.
The firm's 155MW Tasajero I plant is already operating, while the 200MW Tasajero III is currently applying for environmental licensing. The firm is also looking to develop the 250MW Tasajero IV project at a later date.
Termotasajero is betting on coal-fired projects on expectations that the local coal industry will continue to grow, Montoya said.
To improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact, Tasajero II will employ low NOx emitting burners and particle filters, he said.
BNamericas will host its fourth LatAm Power Generation Summit in Santiago, Chile, on August 13-14. Click here to download the agenda.
