Ecuador's 96MW Esmeraldas II thermo project comes online

Termoesmeraldas, a unit of Ecuador's state power generation holding Celec, added 96MW with the operational startup of thermoelectric project Esmeraldas II.

In February 2012, Harbin Electric International broke ground on the US$101mn fuel oil-fired complex, which was financed in part by China Development Bank.

State oil company Petroecuador supplies fuel from its Esmeraldas refinery for the project's dozen 8MW units.

Celec-controlled generator Termopichincha is scheduled to add 50MW from Guangopolo II in the second half of the year.

Ecuador's effective capacity at end-April totaled 5.1GW; non-renewables accounted for 53.9%, hydroelectric 43.9%, biomass 1.83%, wind 0.37% and solar 0.10%.
