Multilateral IDB and the Venezuelan government launched a project to promote the development of small-scale hydroelectric plants in southern Venezuela and the Los Andes region.
Project objectives include the design, construction and launch of at least eight new mini-hydros (50-500kW capacity) and the rehabilitation of at least three existing small-scale plants, an IDB procurement document said.
IDB's Global Environment Facility is providing US$4.66mn of financing, with another US$16.8mn coming from the Venezuelan government.
A previous study identified suitable sites totaling an estimated 100MW of potential mini-hydro capacity in southern Venezuela and the Los Andes region. The same study identified 88 primarily indigenous communities located fewer than 2.5km from suitable rivers, who would benefit from small-scale hydro plant development, the bank said.
Interested parties have until March 4, 2015 to present proposals.
