In Focus: Colombia and Ecuador forging closer energy ties
Colombia and Ecuador have announced plans to step up energy integration in an effort to reinforce supply to their respective power grids.
The pledge was one of 43 agreements signed off by Colombian President Iván Duque (left of picture) and his Ecuadorian counterpart Lenín Moreno (right of picture) during a binational cabinet meeting in Quito on Wednesday.
"It's an opportunity to expand the binational exchange of energy, build cooperation programs to share knowledge of the subsoil and advance the joint work of electrification in border areas," Colombian energy minister María Fernanda Suárez said in a statement.
While energy trade between the neighbors mostly comprises Colombian exports, Suárez said Ecuador remains an important option for her country's back-up supply.
"We want even closer energy ties [because] cooperation is vital. Two years ago we relied on energy supply from Ecuador," she added, referring to a 2016 drought that left Colombia on the verge of energy rationing.
The Ecuadorian government also released a statement that highlighted efforts to facilitate electricity trade between companies on either side of the border.
ENERGY TRADE
Exports from Colombia's national grid to Ecuador averaged 1.55GWh/d in November, according to Colombian power system operator XM.
For its part, Ecuadorian grid operator Cenace reported that electricity from Colombia accounted for close to 3% of its total supply in October.
Ecuador currently purchases electricity from Colombia via short-term transactions, with demand rising during times of low rainfall or when Colombian imports offer a competitive price advantage.
GEOTHERMAL POWER
Efforts to increase energy integration between the neighbors include plans for joint power generation.
In 2012, Ecuador's Celec and Colombia's Isagén signed a cooperation agreement to develop a 138MW geothermal plant in Ecuador's Carchi province, utilizing heat from the Chiles-Cerro Negro volcanic complex on the Colombian border.
In February this year, government officials from both countries met in Pereira, in Colombia's western coffee-growing region, to discuss integration proposals within the framework of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) and the Andean power interconnection initiative Sinea.
