Mexican brewer thirsty for renewable energy
Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo announced it will shift to renewable energy use in its production facilities in collaboration with Iberdrola México.
Grupo Modelo, which is the largest brewery in the country by market share and produces the Corona brand, among others, said it will make a formal announcement regarding its renewable energy plans on March 28.
The presentation will feature Carlos Brito, the global CEO of AB InBev, which bought out Modelo in 2013 for US$20bn, and the corporate director of Iberdrola México, Enrique Alba.
GERMAN-MEXICAN COOPERATION
Also on the renewables front, Mexico's electricity and clean energy institute (INEEL) and German development agency GIZ met to explore expanding cooperation.
Themes discussed at INEEL's headquarters in Cuernavaca (pictured) included sustainable energy, including solar power, and reuse of urban waste, The Mexican agency said.
The meeting was attended by Joscha Rosenbusch, GIZ´s principal advisor on large-scale solar projects in Mexico, Gabriela Baeza, an advisor on a program for harnessing urban waste for energy use, and William Jensen Díaz, an advisor on a Mexico-Germany energy alliance, among others.
Last July, Mexico's foreign trade bank Bancomext signed a renewable energy memorandum of understanding with GIZ and German development bank KfW to promote the development of renewable projects in Mexico, with a focus on solar.
And last April, Bancomext and KfW signed two credit lines worth up to 180mn euros (about US$200mn) to finance renewable energy projects in the country.
