Mexico awards power contract to bolster northwestern grid

A consortium of Spanish and Mexican firms has been awarded a US$33mn contract to reinforce electricity supply to Mexico's northwest.

The successful group is formed by Propiedades Inmobiliarias de México and Spain-based companies Ortiz Construcciones y Proyectos and Juan Galindo SLU, Mexico's state power company CFE said in a statement.

Under terms of the contract, the consortium will build two 500MVA substations, eight distribution feeders and five transmission lines totaling 76km in Sinaloa state.

"The objective is to guarantee electricity supply and reduce operating costs in the country's northwest," the statement said.

CFE said it received nine proposals during the tender process, five of which met minimum technical requirements.

The value of the winning bid was almost US$10mn under the CFE's budget, the utility added.
