Pacific Hydro submits 125MW Chile project for approval
Australian renewable energy firm Pacific Hydro presented an environmental impact study to Chilean environmental authority SEA for a 125MW run-of-the-river hydroelectric plant.
The US$280mn Nido de Águilas plant would be built in Chile's O'Higgins region (VI) and inject 462GWh/y into the central SIC grid, according to the EIS.
In Chile, Pacific Hydro already operates the Chacayes (111MW), La Higuera (155MW), La Confluencia (158MW), Coya and Pangal (76MW combined) hydroelectric plants.
Nido de Águilas would be built on the Cortaderal river in the Alto Cachapoal valley.
Pacific Hydro said in a statement that it expects the environmental permitting process to take 12-18 months, after which time the company will launch a tender for the plant's construction.
Construction will take approximately 46 months, the firm said. Nido de Águilas also includes an 18km transmission line that would connect to existing transmission infrastructure pertaining to the Chacayes plant.
Pacific Hydro withdrew the original environmental study for Nido de Águilas in 2012 in order to make the project more efficient and environmentally friendly.
Hydroelectricity accounted for 34.8% of energy generated on the central SIC grid in February, compared to 35.3% in the same month 2014, according to data from grid operator CDEC-SIC.
