Pacific Rubiales helps offset Colombia power demand drop

Power offtake by Pacific Rubiales Energy (PRE) has helped offset reduced demand from Colombia's large special consumers group.

In its latest demand forecast, mining and energy planning unit UPME attributes a "strong" electricity consumption drop to public order disruptions that impacted Oxy and to maintenance by Cerromatoso.

PRE in July connected its fields to the national transmission network at the Chivor substation.

Electricity demand on the national SIN grid in October rose 4% year-on-year to 5.46TWh, according to power wholesaler XM.

Maximum demand last month hit 9.55GW compared with 9.22GW in October 2013.

October generation totaled 5.52TWh, with hydro accounting for 65.7%, thermo 28.3%, small plants 5.13% and cogeneration 0.83%.
