Twelve of 31 Peruvian geothermal exploration authorizations are pending approval of the environmental management instrument or notification that such an instrument is not required.
Once developers secure environmental notification, they have an initial 24 months to carry out work that may be extended by 12 months. Peru does not have installed geothermal power capacity.
Studies for the other 19 geothermal exploration authorizations, also held by the four companies along with Andes Power, Geotérmica Quellaapacheta and Hot Rock, are scheduled for completion in 2015-17.
The authorizations are for geothermal fields in Ancash, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Moquegua, Pasco, Puno and Tacna regions.
