Brazilian power utility CEEE and the Rio Grande do Sul state government signed an agreement with Sonda IT, the Brazilian subsidiary of Chilean IT company Sonda, to overhaul CFEE's technology infrastructure.

The 125mn-real (US$56mn) project involves implementing various IT solutions and systems, including SAP's ERP platform, Sonda IT's billing and tax management suites and a new customer information system to manage registration, reading, metering, onsite billing, storage, collection and field services.

Sonda IT will also be responsible for installing and integrating new IBM servers and storage.

The three-year project is being financed with loans from the IDB and French development agency CBR.

Once completed, CEEE's revamped systems should process information and support customers more efficiently.

The contract is part of the state government's Pró-Energia program to expand and modernize the electric system of capital Porto Alegre's metropolitan region.

The utility last carried out an IT process review in 2004.

CEEE distributes power to 72 cities and towns in Rio de Grande do Sul state, serving around 4.8mn people.
