Embratel invests in edge computing infrastructure
Brazilian ICT services provider Embratel, controlled by América Móvil group, will invest 30mn reais (US$7.8mn) in the construction of edge computing infrastructure in 16 different points in the country.
Edge computing service – which decentralizes storage and computing for customers – is expected to be activated later this year, the company said.
Rather than concentrating the traditional storage and processing capabilities in a central cloud, or in traditional servers at the customer premises, edge computing bundles the two and spreads data processing capacity across the territory. Companies using it can keep their applications and information increasingly closer to their end users.
The infrastructure implemented will be set up in Pernambuco, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Vitória, Manaus, Belém, Brasília and Goiânia. Other points will be linked in a second stage later this year.
The investment will allotted to a cloud orchestrator, servers, processing, security and communication between the points. Existing infrastructure from Claro Brasil will also be used.
