Environmental evaluation suspended on US$900mn Chilean highway
Construction of the El Salto-Príncipe de Gales stretch of the Américo Vespucio highway in Chilean capital Santiago has suffered a new setback, as environmental evaluation service SEA decided to suspend the environmental impact evaluation of the US$926mn project, the concessionaire stated in a filing to securities and insurance regulator SVS.
In a resolution cited by operator Sociedad Concesionaria Vespucio Oriente (AVO) in a press release was published by agency Mediabanco, the reason for the suspension of the evaluation is that the regulator wanted to await the results of an investigation into an SEA official.
Currently, prosecutors are investigating links between the official and AVO, with suggestions that the actions of the official could constitute a felony. Newspaper El Mercurio specified that this same SEA official may have participated in preparing one of the highway studies presented to the SEA in November 2015.
AVO said that it had no knowledge of the alleged actions and that the study had been updated.
The company stated that it will continue to work to obtain the approval for the project as it is "a very important road infrastructure for the Metropolitan region."
