Falconbridge submits Lomas Bayas expansion to Conama

Bnamericas
Canadian miner Falconbridge (NYSE: FAL) has submitted to Chilean environmental authority Conama a project to expand production at its Lomas Bayas mine to 75,000t/y copper cathode, Conama's environmental impact evaluation system SEIA reported in a statement. The US$335mn project aims to combat diminishing ore grades at the Lomas Bayas I open-pit by mining new reserves at the Lomas Bayas II deposit some 3km away. Daily ore extraction would increase from 80,000t to 124,000t split among roughly 41,500t/d high-grade ore and 82,500t/d low-grade ore, the statement said. Lomas Bayas, in northern Chile's region II, churned out 63,147t of copper cathode in 2005. Falconbridge also has the Collahuasi copper mine and Altonorte copper smelter in the country.
