Four groups advance in Puerto Rico grid call

Puerto Rico's government has prequalified four of the five groups that submitted documents in December in the RFQ to manage and operate power utility PREPA's transmission and distribution system as part of the island's energy transformation plan.

The prequalified firms are Duke Energy, Exelon, PSEG Services and Quanta Consortium (Atco-IEM-Quanta Services), according to local PPP authority PRPPA.

PRPPA will now send RFPs to the four groups, with selection expected to take place in the third quarter.

Earlier this month, Carlos Mercader, head of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, led a delegation that visited US government officials and lawmakers in Washington DC to seek greater support for the energy transformation plan.

Mercader was joined by PRPPA director Omar Marrero, PREPA head José Ortiz and the utility's board chairman Elí Díaz.
