Global alliances the tonic of MWC 2016
Partnerships and collaboration between technology giants has been the theme of this Mobile World Congress 2016, currently being held in Barcelona.
Companies like Ericsson, Intel, Cisco, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and others have announced major partnerships between themselves and with operators, knowing that only through collaboration can they navigate this rapidly-evolving industry.
Here are some of the key announcements so far:
ERICSSON-INTEL-CISCO
One of the biggest partnership announcements of the conference so far has been the extension of the collaboration between Ericsson, Intel and Cisco.
In November, last year Ericsson and Intel announced they would join forces to work on next-generation networks geared mainly at developing solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT), encompassing 5G, cloud and IP.
In September, Ericsson teamed up with Intel and Nokia to develop IoT products to market that are suited for narrow-band LTE (NB-LTE), a 4G variant well suited for M2M communication due to low implementation cost and power efficiency.
This week, Cisco, Ericsson and Intel also announced that they will collaborate to build the first 5G router, enabling faster speeds, lower latency and the ability to handle more connected devices.
The announcement reinforces comments made to BNamericas last week by Ericsson's chief strategy officer and head of M&A, Rima Qureshi, that tech companies can no longer develop everything themselves given the number of industries involved in the evolution of 5G.
Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg announced that three months on, the strategic partnership with Cisco had led to 200 customer engagements, resulting in multiple customer wins.
One such win is an agreement with Dominican cable TV operator Aster to bolster the latter's service cable network, deploying IPTV services through Ericsson's Mediaroom TV Platform and boosting data speeds by a factor of 10.
ERICSSON-AMAZON WEB SERVICES
Ericsson has announced plans to form a global business, technology and services alliance with Amazon Web Services to accelerate cloud transformation for telcos.
The companies will seek to drive the convergence of mobile and cloud infrastructure to help telcos capitalize on IoT, big data, improve productivity and efficiency and reduce complexity.
Ericsson leverage AWS to provide end-to-end security and data traffic management offerings, as well as storage services.
Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg commented in a release that Ericsson is undergoing a transformation journey with now 66% of business coming from software and services compared to several years ago when the majority was hardware.
PARTNERSHIPS WITH TELCOS
Last week, Ericsson announced plans to work with AT&T, Telefónica and Vodafone to test 5G solutions, which is the key theme at MWC this year. This week Ericsson announced it was adding T-Mobile to that list. In addition, the collaboration with Cisco to develop a 5G router involves work with Verizon.
Regarding partnerships extending beyond the network, AT&T's Digital Life program, which explores areas such as connected cars, is in discussions with Ericsson to provide wireless home security and automation solutions internationally.
And in the area of connected cars, Ericsson has teamed up with Chinese automobile manufacturer Geely.
