Chile's Cyber Day sales up a quarter
Chile's three-day Cyber Day e-commerce event held last week surpassed expectations, reaching a total of US$145m in sales with travel, home improvement and footwear and apparel being the categories garnering most interest.
Before the event, the Santiago chamber of commerce (CCS) had said it was aiming to reach US$120mn compared to sales of US$111mn in 2016. This year's event saw a 30% increase in dollar terms and a 24% increase in peso terms versus 2016.
The CCS said there were 45mn visits to the websites of the 166 companies registered for the May 29-31 event, up 22% compared to last year, while the number of transactions reached 900,000, a 50% increase. Total sales were 10 times those of a normal day.
On average prices fell 26% and discounts were up to 70%. More than 100,000 products were put on special offer.
Sales of footwear and apparel almost tripled versus the previous year and led in terms of the number of transactions.
The mobile channel continued to become more significant this year, accounting for more than half of all visits to the official Cyber Day website, while accounting for 29% of total transactions.
The CCS said that, on the whole, the event improved on last year in terms of products on offer and that websites performed without problems and there were no difficulties with the speed of payment methods.
Companies also reported that they captured 25,000 new clients each on average.
