Entel, Bitel continue closing gap on Peru market leaders
Peruvian telcos Entel and Bitel have continued to close the gap on market leaders Telefónica and Claro, reaching a joint market share of 30.7% in the first quarter compared to 29.8% in December, amidst increasing competition for mobile broadband and higher speeds and capacity, according to regulator Osiptel.
According to the regulator, Telefónica and Claro had market shares of 37.8% and 31.5%, respectively.
The market has seen a boom in flat rate and cheaper postpaid internet plans. The cost per megabyte has fallen 92% in the last four years to 1 céntimo per megabyte.
Prices of fixed line plans have also declined 72.6% in the last six years from 31 soles (US$9.5) per megabyte in 2012 to 8.5 soles in 2017.
The country reached 40mn active mobile lines and market penetration of 130% at end-March. Osiptel head Rafael Muente said that the weight of telecommunications as a percentage of GDP reached 4.9% in 2017 compared to 1.6% in 1994.
Investment in the telecoms sector reached US$1.383bn in 2017.
Pay-TV services connections reached 1.97mn connections in 2017 and 22.3% of homes, while fixed internet reached 2.31mn lines, or 26.3% of homes.
