ICE to focus on network upgrades, CentAm expansion
Costa Rican state-run telco ICE will focus on improving its broadband services and preparing Central-American markets.
The telcos' decision responds to the news that competitors Telefónica and América Móvil recently picked up spectrum in the 1800MHz and 1.9-2.1GHz bands in a tender. ICE was not allowed to participate due to spectrum cap rules.
As private operators prepare new mobile plans for this year, ICE's telecommunications manager Jaime Palermo said the telco expects to improve service quality, and offer more data and greater speeds. ICE is also seeking to carry out tests with 5G technology, reported daily El Financiero.
The company expects to upgrade its fixed broadband network by the end of the year. According to Palermo, ICE will rely on large content providers to reduce latency and international traffic.
The ICE executive underscored that the telco is assessing risks in other markets, as they have the capacity to operate abroad. ICE could partner with Hondura's state-controlled operator Hondutel to participate in a tender for spectrum, and the Costa Rican operator is also in talks with a company to provide fixed internet in El Salvador.
ICE already provides fixed broadband and public wi-fi in Nicaragua in a joint venture with power-utility Enatrel.
