Mexico's OTT operators primed for subscription windfall

A report from Digital TV Research says that around 8.5mn Mexicans are currently subscribed to an OTT service and the number could reach 17.5mn by the end of 2023.

Revenue from video subscription is expected to grow 104% to US$1.6bn by 2023, according to the study cited by daily El Universal. OTT players are expected to bring in US$798mn this year.

By comparison, Mexico reported 22.6mn subscriptions to pay-TV services in the first quarter, or 67 out of every 100 households.

OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime offer consumers wide amounts of content on demand over the internet in exchange for a monthly fee. Two Mexican companies, América Móvil and Televisa, have launched their own OTTs in recent years.

The platforms, which compete with traditional pay-TV subscriptions, have been at the center of controversy as pay TV operators have demanded they be regulated and taxed under the same rules.
