Telcel leads Mexico mobile phone market investments
Consulting firm Mediatelecom Policy & Law positioned Telcel as the operator that invested the most in Mexico's mobile phone market in 2015, with investments totaling 12.8bn pesos (US$679mn).
Spanish telco Telefónica Movistar invested 3.3bn, followed by AT&T with 2bn pesos.
Dividing capex by total number of subscribers, Mexico's three main operators invested an average of 181 pesos per subscriber in 2015, or 5.52% less than in 2014.
AT&T led with 235 pesos per user, followed by Telcel, with 175 pesos. Telefónica Movistar came in third place with 132 pesos per subscriber.
Telcel has a market share of 68% in the mobile phone market, and accounted to 71% of investments made in the sector, according to data from regulator IFT. Telefónica has a 23% market share and was responsible for 18% of the investments made, while AT&T's holds a market share of 8% and reached investments of 11%.
Telcel's brand was valued at US$3.32bn this year by British valuation and brand strategy firm Brand Finance, earning the title of most valuable brand in the country.
