IDB has approved a US$35mn grant to help Haiti modernize its energy sector and improve the financial and operational management of the state utility Eléctricité d'Haïti (EDH). "This is the first of three policy-based operations the IDB expects to make over three years to help Haiti develop a reliable and sustainable electricity system," the lender said in a statement. According to the bank, around 70% of residents lack power, service averages 10 hours a day but is plagued by outages, and available generation capacity stands at less than one-third of the estimated 500MW demand. IDB is also supporting the overhaul of the Péligre hydroelectric plant, solar energy use and EDH work to reduce technical and commercial losses by upgrading equipment and boosting billing and collection efficiency. Another goal is to promote the switch to LPG from charcoal, the most commonly used cooking fuel in Haiti.
