IN BRIEF: Bolivia investing US$214mn in irrigation
Bolivia is investing US$214mn in irrigation projects benefiting five departments as part of the government's Mi Riego (my irrigation) program.
The departments to benefit from the projects are Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Oruro, Potosí and Tarija, state news agency ABI said.
The goal of the investment – for new dams and irrigation systems, among other infrastructure – is to ensure 25,000ha of farmland has a supply of irrigation water. About some 30,000 families will benefit, it added.
The head of Mi Riego, Iver Lugones, said the government is considering injecting an additional US$157mn into the initiative, as originally announced by President Evo Morales in August last year.
