Argentina, Chile sign agreement on Agua Negra tunnel
The presidents of Chile and Argentina, Michelle Bachelet and Mauricio Macri, respectively, signed an agreement on the binational entity responsible for building the Agua Negra cross-border tunnel.
During Macri's official visit to Chilean capital Santiago, he said that relations between the two countries have progressed in the last year and a half, and that he hoped this would lead to deeper integration, according to a press release from the Argentine presidency.
Macri said that there have been advances in physical connectivity between the nations and that there are projects in the works that will "improve the infrastructure that we already have."
Meanwhile, Bachelet said that the countries' governments are exploring mechanisms to improve traffic at border crossings and also highlighted the progress in the Las Leñas tunnel, which is currently in the design phase, according to the latest BNamericas update.
She also said that the two governments are working on an agreement to liberalize bilateral trade. "In this context, we want to promote initiatives that allow us to advance in the convergence of the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur," the main trade blocs in Latin America.
The Agua Negra tunnel will connect Chile's north-central Coquimbo region (IV) with Argentina's San Juan province.
So far 10 companies have prequalified to build the structure, which is expected to cost US$1.5bn.
