Contecon investing to expand facilities in Manzanillo port

Mexican port operator firm Contecon Manzanillo has announced that will start construction of the second phase of the TEC II container terminal in Mexico's Manzanillo port, designed to handle the demand of the autoparts industry, before the scheduled date.

The terminal is operated under concession by Contecon Manzanillo, a subsidiary of the Philippines company International Container Terminal Services, (ICTSI), which will invest US$100mn in the construction works on the second phase, Juan Carlos Garrido, director of development of new business at ICTSI for Latin America was quoted as saying by state news agency Notimex.

Contecon Manzanillo handles between 60,000-63,000 Teus per month, Garrido added.

When the expansion is complete, the terminal will be able to handle 750,000 Teus per year, up from 500,000 Teus handled last year, the executive said.

The second phase of the TEC II terminal was scheduled to be built in 2017 and the third phase after 2020, according to information from Manzanillo port.

Between January and June this year the port handled 12.8Mt of cargo, down 0.5% compared with the same period of last year.
