Grupo México aims to finish delayed Mexican highway in 2015
Grupo México (BMV: GMEXICOB) expects to finish construction of the Salamanca-León highway in central Guanajuato state in April 2015, more than a year later than planned.
A consortium - comprised by Grupo México's construction arm México Constructora Industrial, as well as Coconal and Operadora de Autopistas - won in April 2011 the 4.7bn-peso (US$350mn) concession to build and operate the 77.6km tollroad.
Construction began in March 2012 and was expected to last 24 months, but only 45% of the works are completed, México Constructora Industrial's general manager Julio Larrea said during BNamericas' 3rd Mexico Infrastructure Summit.
The main obstacles were social opposition from residents and delays in land expropriations in the area.
"Construction [time] has been extended for more than a year," Larrea said. "It has raised costs, delayed the beginning of the operation and above all, created several social protests."
The tollroad will link to the Morelia-Salamanca and León-Aguascalientes highways.
Work is being carried out in two stretches, the first 28.7km from Salamanca to Irapuato and the second 48.9km to León.
The group will operate the highway under a 30-year concession contract.
