Mexico investing over US$100mn to improve school infra in Puebla state
Mexico's federal government, through the national institute of physical infrastructure for education (Inifed), will invest over 2bn pesos (US$106.5mn) to improve school infrastructure in the central state of Puebla.
The announcement was made by Inifed director Héctor Gutiérrez during a visit to the state for the opening of works completed under the Escuelas al Cien federal program, which aims to give a facelift to the country's school infrastructure.
The investment will serve to carry out works to upgrade 1,377 schools throughout the state's 217 municipalities.
Some 1.05bn pesos have already been allocated to carry out 423 projects to improve schools in 178 of the state's municipalities, according to a local government statement.
Through the Escuelas Al Cien program, government and state authorities carried out works to upgrade two schools, one in Tepeaca and another in Tepatlaxco de Hidalgo, with a 15mn-peso investment.
Last year, Mexico's education minister Aurelio Nuño said that the country would make significant investments to improve the infrastructure of 33,000 schools before the end of the current government's term. Finance ministry authorities had previously said that the 5bn pesos raised from a bond issue made in March last year would be used for that purpose, and promised more bond issues for the remaining term of the current government.
Inifed is the entity tasked with building, equipping, providing maintenance and rehabilitating public education facilities in the country's 32 states. The Escuelas al Cien program is a joint initiative between Inifed, state governments, civil society and parents. The program specifically targets elementary schools, particularly in marginalized and indigenous communities.
