Uruguay's US$825mn rail PPP passes environmental hurdle

Uruguay's environmental regulator Dinama authorized works to begin on the US$825mn Central Railway PPP.

The authorization represents a preliminary environmental approval for the Central Railway, meaning concessionaire Via Central will have to keep regulators updated on the project's development and seek new approvals from Dinama to implement environmental management plans, the housing ministry (MVOTMA) said in a press release.

The evaluation of the project was temporarily halted by a labor conflict at the ministry since its largest union had decided to halt all environmental proceedings as a way of protest. The measure was lifted on March 13.

The Central Railway project consists of the construction and operation of a 273km freight rail line connecting capital Montevideo with the town of Paso de los Toros in Tacuarembó department.
