La Paz seeks to eliminate overhead cabling
The municipal government of La Paz is drafting a measure aimed at fully eliminating overhead cabling in the city in a year, forcing telcos and electric power companies to use subterranean ducts.
The move was partly fueled by the fact that the municipal government found abandoned telecom equipment in poles and cabinets throughout the city, which creates visual pollution and hazardous conditions.
According to city government councilor Fabián Siñani, 60% of the overhead cables in La Paz are no longer being used, reported daily La Razón.
The proposal, which will be sent for approval in two weeks, seeks to regulate the deployment of cables in public places, establish technical guidelines for the task and eliminate obsolete infrastructure.
A benefit of such regulation would be that the municipality will be able to collect economic resources from the use of existing underground ducts. In addition, the municipal government would work alongside telcos and power utilities in designing new ducts, as only a portion of the downtown area has this type of infrastructure.
