Lower house working group meets with Brazil mining stakeholders

The mining code working group of Brazil’s lower house will hear stakeholders’ opinions on possible regulatory changes.

The meeting was organized by Liberal Party lawmaker Joaquim Passarinho “to give voice to the segment that provides the driving force for mining, in order to understand the obstacles that hinder smooth progress,” according to a press release.

Participants include mining association Ibram's institutional director Rinaldo Mancin, representatives of gold association Anoro, and Sandro Mabel, the president of industry confederation CNI’s mining council.

The lower house created the working group last year to update regulations, including for tailings dams, exploration auctions and financing mechanisms, as lawmakers consider existing rules, created in 1967, outdated.

Mining associations have closely followed the discussions to avoid, among others, increased taxes and stricter licensing measures.
