Votorantim avoids strike at Peru's Cajamarquilla zinc refinery
Brazil's Votorantim Metais managed to avoid an impending strike at its Cajamarquilla zinc refinery in Peru after reaching an agreement with workers, a union official said.
Workers at the plant on Lima's outskirts had planned to strike May 6 over profit-sharing and better working conditions, but called off the stoppage after the company agreed to review a seven-point platform, Sitrazinc union general secretary Daniel Trejo told BNamericas.
About 650 workers held a 48-hour stoppage last month after an employee was fatally electrocuted in March, the third fatal accident at the refinery in the past two years, according to the union. The April 19-20 stoppage marked the first strike at the refinery since 2001.
Votorantim's office in Lima did not return a telephone call seeking comment.
The refinery's operations were also set back by flooding in March caused by the El Niño phenomenon, which has left 113 people dead in Peru and 180,000 homeless to date.
Votorantim, which also controls the Milpo and Atacocha zinc-lead-silver mines in Peru, produced 341,479t zinc, 89,431kg silver, 6,694t copper and 820t cadmium at Cajamarquilla last year, according to the energy and mines ministry. The company also has capacity to produce 76t/y indium, according to its website.
The Brazilian company, which acquired the refinery from Teck Cominco in 2004, completed a US$500mn expansion in 2010 to double installed capacity.
Peru, the world's third largest zinc miner, produced 1.34Mt of the metal last year. Workers have gone on strike this year at Southern Copper and Freeport-McMoRan's Cerro Verde copper mine in the country.
