Mexico City future airport operator urged to be more transparent
Opposition deputy Rafael Hernández, chair of the special legislative commission in charge of overseeing construction of Mexico City's new international airport, met with public administration (SFP) minister Arely Gómez to discuss the transparency of the project's procurement process, SFP said in a statement.
Hernández told reporters that the lack of information on the project's updated estimated investment was also discussed in the meeting, according to local daily El Economista.
The lawmaker said that Gómez acknowledges that the transport ministry needs to be more transparent regarding the project's contracting process.
"The minister said that she has even told [future airport operator] GACM's internal monitoring organ that the contracting process had its faults and they needed to strengthen it," Hernández is quoted as saying.
According to the legislator, there is no information available on the economic and environmental assessments, the future of the current airport site and the terms of the contract forthe US$3bn loan that GACM secured with international banks to finance construction. He added that some information related to the tenders, such as the number of foreign companies involved, is also missing.
Hernández said that based on a review of the 2014 government accounts made by the federal auditor, there have been some irregularities regarding the purchase and installation of materials for the construction of some preliminary works, such as the Chimalhuacán II and Churubusco-Xochiaca tunnels, the report said.
