Mexico City opens new waterworks
Mexico City mayor José Ramón Amieva has officially opened a new pumping plant in the Coyoacán district and a potable water treatment plant serving Iztapalapa, the most populous district of the federal capital.
The waterworks will serve to meet potable water demand in those areas of the city, the local government said in a release.
The automated Cherokees pumping plant required investments of 62.5mn pesos (US$3mn) and is expected to benefit 400,000 people in Coyoacán's Los Culhuacanes neighborhood and Cerro de la Estrella in Iztapalapa.
This facility was already working before being officially opened.
According to Amieva, there are currently three main pumping plants serving Iztapalapa, in addition to another that serves as a backup, while Coyoacán is served by two pumping plants, plus another one for backup.
Meanwhile, the Xotepingo 4-C potable water treatment plant treats 4.32mn l/d of water.
The plant was built to benefit 26,000 people and will supply water to Iztapalapa's Jaltepec and Quetzalcóatl water storage tanks.
Works on the facility began in December 2017 and were completed in May.
The two plants were built by local water utility Sacmex.
