Mexico City-Toluca rail could start operations this year
The interurban passenger rail link under construction between Mexico City and Mexico state capital Toluca could start operations by the end of the year, according to transport and communications minister Javier Jiménez Espriú.
On Monday, the minister said however that the deadline would only apply to the two sections that link Zinacantepec, in Toluca's metropolitan area, to the Mexico City district of Santa Fe.
The start of operations would depend on an analysis the transport and communications ministry (SCT) will carry out to determine if it can be profitable to open the line while the third section remains incomplete, local press reported.
"We don't know the demand the train will have, because the main section is the one connecting Santa Fe to Observatorio, and as long as that one is not open, the train will not be profitable enough," the minister is quoted by local daily El Financiero as saying.
Construction progress on those two sections has reached 95%, the minister noted.
The 57.9km line comprises three sections, of which the first two, in Mexico state, are the responsibility of the SCT. The third is being overseen by the Mexico City government, and based on the most up-to-date information provided at the end of last year, construction was about to reach 60%.
One of the landmark projects in the portfolio of former president Enrique Peña Nieto, the price tag is estimated at 59.2bn pesos, up from the 38.6bn pesos originally budgeted.
Construction was originally scheduled to be completed last year, but the deadline was pushed back after both federal and Mexico City authorities faced problems with securing relevant rights of way, among other issues.
An exact completion date remains uncertain.
