Mexico infra plan includes US$5.6bn hospital cash pot
The Mexican national infrastructure plan 2014-18 proposes 72.8bn pesos (US$5.6bn) of investments in order to plug the gap in hospital infrastructure.
Mexico is well below the OECDaverage in terms of available hospital beds with an average 1.7 beds per 1,000 residents, compared to the OECD average of 4.8 beds, according to the plan.
Key weaknesses in the health infrastructure sector over the past few years have included "insufficient budgetary resources, weakness in infrastructure development planning and the resultant problems in the financing of the projects, lack of equipment, human resources and operating and maintenance costs," according to the plan.
Proposed investments under the national infrastructure plan seek to remedy this shortfall through some 87 projects including the construction and modernization of a series of hospitals.
Health spending is one of the six main components of the plan, with other key sectors including infrastructure, water, tourism, housing and energy.
Standout projects include the construction of a new hospital building for Mexico City's national oncology institute at a cost of 2.38bn pesos, construction of a 1.13bn peso regional general hospital in García, Nuevo León state, and a 1.13bn peso regional general hospital for Querétaro.
The plan also focuses on the improvement of hospital infrastructure in areas with "vulnerable populations," in states across the country.
The government also plan to invest some 7bn pesos in hospital infrastructure in the southeast of the country as part of its policy to develop the region. Projects will include construction of five general hospitals, four specialized hospitals and four health clinics.
