Mexico opens US$500mn port and roadworks in Tuxpan
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto inaugurated a new 1bn-peso (US$500m) port in Tuxpan, in the north of the Gulf state of Veracruz, as well as complementary road infrastructure, the federal government announced in a statement.
The new Tuxpan port is home to the US$370mn Tuxpan Port Terminal (TPT), an initiative built under a 20-yer concession by port operator SSA Mexico, which started operations last year.
In addition to the new port, which will help increase Tuxpan's cargo-handling capacity to 22Mt a year, the works include dredging of a 6.5km-long navigation canal to allow the entrance of larger vessels with deadweight of over 50,000t, the 9km Eje Vial Portuario highway, which required a 300mn-peso investment and the 310km-long Distribuidor Vial API-Tuxpan interchange, which connects the port to the Mexico-Tuxpan highway.
The developments required a combined total investment of 12bn pesos, a mix of public and private funds, according to authorities.
"The works that we inaugurated today will contribute to strengthen Mexico's export capacity and competitiveness," Peña Nieto said. "The road infrastructure that we have built to complement the port will make Tuxpan an important logistics hub and turn it into an important region within in the country's Gulf area," he said.
The federal government, in coordination with the Veracruz state government, is currently carrying out two additional road projects that will help to improve the new port's connectivity.
The first stretch of the Veracruz-Tuxpan toll highway is expected to be completed by the end of this year, according to a Veracruz government statement.
Another highway, which will connect Tuxpan to Tampico, a city and port in neighboring Tamaulipas state, is currently under development, according to authorities.
During the inauguration ceremony, representatives of state-oil company Pemex signed an MoU with SSA México to evaluate the potential development of oil and gas infrastructure at the new port's site.
Tuxpan was one of five new port projects launched by the current government. The other four are Veracruz, Matamoros, Seybaplaya and Ciudad del Carmen. The initiatives are part of the government's effort to improve the country's port infrastructure and turn Mexico into a high added-value global logistics platform.
