Mexico's new long-term energy plan submitted for review
Mexico's national energy control center (Cenace) sent a proposal on February 28 for the country's Prodesen long-term energy plan to the energy ministry (Sener), Cenace officials told BNamericas.
The plan to define the development program for the Mexican grid will now be reviewed for approval by Sener's electricity unit, a process which could take several months depending on political approval, the officials said at the Mexico Energy Roundtable in Mexico City organized by US think tank Institute of the America.
At the event Akihito Escobar, head of the interconnection unit of Cenace, said one of the challenges facing the authorities is reconfiguring the electricity transmission grid in order to accommodate the new government's planned emphasis on hydroelectric power.
He pointed out that the government's hydroelectric build-out will require a successful interconnection process that will require large investments, although he added that the use of hydroelectric energy will help stabilize fluctuations between supply and demand and contribute to lower operating costs.
