Mexico's top 5 public electric power projects by investment
With heavy emphasis from electricity utility CFE on maintenance of existing thermoelectric plants, the Mexican government's electricity projects pipeline is heavy on transmission and has no generation projects in the pre-investment phase.
The following is a list of Mexico's most important electric power projects in the pre-investment phase by investment amount that are being tendered by CFE as financed public works contracts.
1. Interconnection national grid to Baja California Sur
This US$1.6bn transmission and distribution project would fill the shoes of the cancelled Cucapah-Seri transmission line. The current project is intended to connect the Baja California peninsula to the national grid by way of a 110km submarine cable. In addition the project will require a 620km transmission line, as well as 195km, 55km and 2 km double circuit transmission lines. The tender is planned to be announced in November 2019.
2. Transmission capacity increase between Puebla-Temascal, Temascal-Coatzacoalcos, Temascal-Grijalva and Grijalva-Tabasco regions
This US$61mn greenfield project in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz involves the installation of seven capacitor banks: three with capacity of 741.1MVAr, two with 885.6MVAr and two with 532.2MVAr, as well as replacing the primary equipment in eight feeders. No date has been fixed for this tender.
3. El Arrajal transformation bank
This US$42.2mn project in the Baja California region will require the installation of 533MVA transformer bank, a 125km transmission line and an additional 55km transmission line. The tender is planned to be announced in March 2020.
4. Energy supply transmission line in Oaxaca and Huatulco
This US$26mn project in the state of Oaxaca requires the construction of a double circuit 90km, 115kV transmission line and a 152km, 230kV single circuit transmission line, as well as the installation of four monophasic reactors at 28MVAr each in 230kV. It is planned to be announced in August 2019.
5. Guadalajara Industrial Banco 3 transmission line
This U$24mn project in Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco will require the construction of a 330MVA electrical substation, a 6.5km of circuit transmission line and terminal equipment for interconnection. It is planned to be announced this month.
