Chile's Mina Carola submits expansion project application

Chilean mid-sized miner Minera Carola has submitted an environmental impact assessment to increase throughput capacity at its namesake copper mine in northern Atacama region (III).

The project seeks to increase throughput capacity to 240,000t/m from 150,000t/m currently, according to documents filed with the regional office of Chile's environmental evaluation service (SEA).

In addition, the project involves the expansion of two dump sites and construction of new sedimentation pools, as well as the optimization of some internal processes, the documents said.

Planned investment is US$20mn, and if the project is approved work is should get underway in January 2018.
