The process is at an early stage and there's no guarantee that a transaction will take place, BHP told Reuters in a statement.

The mine is located in northern Tarapacá region (I). Production last year was 74,000t, according to figures from Chile's copper commission Cochilco.

Workers blocked access to the mine on Wednesday morning, just after the announcement was made, over fears of layoffs. Last month the union said that several onsite visits had taken place for a potential acquisition.

Local industrial conglomerate Copec and Lundin Mining are reported to be interested in acquiring the mine.

BHP did not immediately reply when contacted by BNamericas.
