Chile's environmental regulator approves Mina Invierno plan

Chile's environmental regulator SMA approved the work plan presented by local coal mining firm Mina Invierno to comply with a sanctioning procedure imposed by the SMA in 2016.

SMA had charged Mina Invierno with 11 breaches of its environmental permit related to water handling issues, as well as faulty monitoring reports. It was the second SMA procedure against the coal miner, having been charged first in 2014.

In order to address the breaches, Mina Invierno submitted a plan comprised of 49 actions, including the implementation of an on-site water treatment system, the monitoring and control of waste disposed on site, slope stabilization, and the proper monitoring of water-related issues, among others.

The plan will see the company invest 1.193bn pesos (US$1.8mn) over a 24-month period, SMA said in a press release.

Mina Invierno, located in the southernmost Magallanes region (XII), is a JV between local holding Copec and shipping company Ultramar.
