Chinese iron ore imports likely to be subdued
Chinese iron ore imports rose 4.3% year-on-year to 90Mt in July, following a decrease the previous month, Barclays said in a note to clients.
But according to the bank, year-to-date imports of iron ore in January-July dipped 1% to 621Mt compared to the same period of 2017.
"Chinese steel production has been growing at low single-digit rates this year, despite environmental restrictions. However, growth has tended to be at the less-polluting EAF furnaces which consume scrap, and this has depressed imports of iron ore," the bank said.
"With new emissions restrictions imposed in Tangshan on July 20, we expect iron ore imports to slow next month," Barclays said.
Australia and Brazil are the main suppliers of iron ore to China, which imported a record 1.08Bt last year.
Brazil's overall iron ore exports rose 54% year-on-year in July, reaching US$1.81bn, according to figures released by foreign trade department Secex earlier this month.
